Beginning near Wasilla, this scenic drive heads south toward Anchorage before continuing along Alaska Highway 1 through the forests and mountains of the Chugach region. As the road moves farther south, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged, with forested valleys, rocky peaks, and towering mountain slopes surrounding the highway. The route eventually reaches Turnagain Arm, where expansive views across the water create a dramatic transition from the inland landscape to the coastal scenery of Southcentral Alaska.
From there, Alaska Highway 1 follows the shoreline of Turnagain Arm and continues toward the Kenai Peninsula, passing through some of the most spectacular scenery along the highway south of Anchorage. The road winds between steep mountain slopes and the water, with constantly changing views of forests, peaks, tidal flats, and distant wilderness. The journey ends just before Tern Lake, at the junction where the highway continues toward Seward.
